Departure Control
Class C and D

Many student drivers are afraid of the departure check, but there’s really no need to be. It’s a required part of the driving test, but with a bit of preparation, it’s easy to handle. Here’s a simple explanation of how the pre-drive inspection works and what you need to pay attention to.

Here’s how it works:

Start learning here:

The departure check is a mandatory part of the practical driving test for classes C (truck) and D (bus). Its purpose is to verify whether the student driver is able to independently check the road safety and operational safety of their vehicle.

The examiner decides whether the departure check will be carried out before or after the driving test – both options are possible.

The student driver draws or receives a card from a set of ten cards.
Each card contains six or seven questions:

  • Truck drivers (Class C) answer 6 questions.

  • Bus drivers (Class D) answer 7 questions, with the seventh question applying only to bus drivers.

The questions on the card must be read aloud and answered independently by the student driver.
The goal is not to test how well someone speaks German, but whether the student understands the question and can answer it correctly in a technical sense.

If the student cannot answer a question, they are allowed to try another question from the same topic area (1–7) from a different card.
If the second question is also answered incorrectly, this part of the test is considered failed.

In that case, the driving test will still take place, but the departure check must be repeated on another date.
The driver’s license will only be issued once both parts of the test – the departure check and the driving test – have been passed.

Departure Check – Clear, Focused, Multilingual – START TRAINING HERE!

All content is based on the official testing guidelines and is mandatory.

Each card is available in six languages – including matching videos in the same languages.

The cards are divided into two sections:

  • The basic section – compact and fully sufficient to pass the test.

  • The advanced section – additional knowledge taken directly from the official guidelines; helpful, but often too detailed for most student drivers.

You stay in control – no fear, no unnecessary overload.

Pass with confidence – step by step.
