Theory Test Explained
The theory test is a major and often nerve-racking step for many learner drivers. It is therefore important to understand how the test works and how you can prepare effectively.
Requirements for the Theory Test
Before you can register for the theory test, your driving licence application must first be processed and approved by the licensing authority.
In most cases, you have already submitted this application together with your documents at the beginning of your training (more information here).
Depending on the federal state, city, or authority, processing times may vary considerably. Sometimes it takes only a few weeks, while in other cases it can take much longer.
The important thing to know is:
You do not have to wait idly during this period. You can already start studying while your application is still being processed.
Preparing with the Learning App
Driving schools work with a learning app, such as the Fahren Lernen MAX app.
There you can:
• learn the official test questions
• review questions you answered incorrectly
• practise mock exams
• track your learning progress
The app uses a traffic light system:
🔴 Red
You have not yet mastered these questions.
🟡 Yellow
You are making progress, but you should continue practising.
🟢 Green
You have usually reached a good level of preparation and are ready for the theory test.
Who registers you for the theory test?
Registration for the theory test is usually not done by the learner driver.
When you feel ready, you should speak to your driving school or the office staff.
The driving school will often check:
• your learning progress
• whether your driving licence application has been approved
• whether you are ready for the test
Once everything is in order, the driving school will register you for the theory test.
How should you study?
Many learner drivers wonder when the right time for the test is.
Experience shows that regular study is much more effective than intensive study shortly before the test.
Often, one or two hours per week are enough if you practise consistently and review the questions regularly.
Important:
• do not just memorise answers
• understand traffic situations and hazards
• review mistakes regularly
• practise consistently
How many questions are there?
The question catalogue currently contains several thousand multiple-choice questions. A selected number of these questions is used for the actual theory test.
The question catalogue is regularly updated and revised.
In addition, reforms are planned that may simplify and reduce the number of questions in the future.
As soon as there are any official changes, we will of course provide updates on this website.
Questions by Licence Category
The number of theory test questions depends on your licence category.
For example:
• Class B: 30 questions
• Class A: 30 questions
• Class C (Truck): 37 questions
• Class D (Bus): 40 questions
• Additional licence category: usually 20 questions
Penalty Points Explained
In the theory test, it is not the number of incorrect answers that matters, but the so-called penalty points.
Depending on the difficulty level, each question is worth between 2 and 5 penalty points.
How Many Penalty Points Are Allowed?
For most driving licence categories, you may have a maximum of 10 penalty points and still pass the theory test.
However, there is one important exception:
If you answer two 5-point questions incorrectly, you will fail the test – even if your total is only 10 penalty points.
This is known as the “two 5-point questions rule”.
Why Are 5-Point Questions Important?
5-point questions usually cover particularly important or potentially dangerous traffic situations.
For example:
• right of way
• safe following distance
• speed
• hazard awareness
• behaviour in critical situations
That is why you should make sure you understand these questions especially well.
Examples of Penalty Points
✅ Passed:
• 5 + 3 + 2 = 10 penalty points
• 4 + 3 + 3 = 10 penalty points
❌ Failed:
• 5 + 5 = two 5-point mistakes
• 5 + 3 + 3 = 11 penalty points
What Happens on the Day of the Test?
On the day of your theory test, you should arrive at the test centre on time and bring a valid form of identification.
Before the test begins, the following will be checked:
• your identity
• your test authorisation
• your driving licence category
The theory test is usually taken on a computer.
Depending on the licence category, the number of questions may vary. For many categories, the test consists of around 30 questions.
The processing time is usually between 30 and 45 minutes.
You can answer the questions at your own pace and review your answers before submitting the test.
You will usually receive your result immediately after completing the test.
What Happens After the Theory Test?
After your theory test, you will receive your result immediately. This means you will know right away whether you have passed or failed.
If You Passed
Congratulations!
If you have passed the theory test, the examination centre will usually inform your driving school automatically.
You can now focus fully on your practical driving lessons and, later, on your practical driving test.
However, passing the theory test does not automatically mean that you can immediately take the practical test. You must first complete enough driving lessons, and your driving instructor must be satisfied with your level of training.
If You Did Not Pass
Failed tests are more common than many people think. The important thing is to stay calm and keep learning.
You can retake the theory test later as many times as necessary. However, there are waiting periods between attempts that must be observed.
The retest is subject to a fee and must be booked again through your driving school.
It often helps to carefully review your mistakes and focus on the topics you were still unsure about.
How Long Is a Passed Theory Test Valid?
After passing the theory test, you have 12 months to pass the practical driving test.
After that period, the theory test certificate expires and the theory test may have to be taken again.
Cheating and Fraud in the Theory Test
The theory test must be taken honestly and fairly.
From time to time, people try to cheat using hidden cameras, microphones, earpieces, or other devices. Cheat sheets or assistance from others are also prohibited.
Such attempts can have serious consequences.
The test will be stopped immediately, and you may have to wait before you are allowed to take another test.
In some cases, this can significantly delay your entire training process.
That is why it is much better to invest a little more time in preparation and learn the material step by step.
Many learner drivers underestimate themselves. With patience, repetition, and regular practice, most people pass the theory test successfully.
