Registering with a Driving School
Registering with a driving school is the first step on your way to getting your driver’s license.
Here are the typical steps you’ll need to follow to register:
1. Make an appointment
You can either call the driving school to schedule an appointment, or simply stop by in person and ask for a registration slot.
2. Bring valid identification
You’ll need to present a valid ID card or passport. This is used to verify your identity and personal information.
If you’re from abroad, you may also need to show a residence permit.
What do you need to bring?
Documents You’ll Need to Provide
When you register at the driving school, you will need to submit a few important documents.
However, you don’t have to bring them all on your first day.
It’s just important that you submit them soon after starting.
Ask your driving school for a checklist of what exactly you need.
Here are the most common items:
Passport Photo
You will need a recent passport photo for your driver’s license application.
The photo must meet official requirements: a neutral facial expression, no hat, and no glasses.
This photo will be forwarded to the traffic authority and printed on your license.
Medical examination
If you want to obtain a truck or bus driver’s license, a medical examination is required, which is usually carried out by a general practitioner or occupational physician. First, the doctor will ask about your medical history, including illnesses, surgeries, or medications that could affect your fitness to drive. This is followed by a physical examination, which includes measuring blood pressure and pulse, listening to the heart and lungs, and checking mobility, reflexes, and general physical condition. In addition, an eye test is required to assess visual acuity, color vision, field of vision, and depth perception. Depending on the situation, further tests such as blood or urine analysis, an ECG, or other examinations may be necessary. At the end, the doctor issues a medical report confirming your health suitability.
Vision Test Certificate
You must take a vision test to prove that your eyesight meets the legal requirements for driving.
This test can be done at an optician or eye doctor.
Once completed, you’ll receive a certificate to hand in at your driving school.
The test is usually inexpensive and can be completed quickly.
First Aid Course Certificate
Proof of completing a first aid course is mandatory for getting your license.
The course usually consists of 9 lessons and covers basic first aid for traffic-related emergencies.
It can be completed in one day, and you’ll receive the certificate immediately.
If your certificate is older than two years, you may need to repeat the course.
Process
You should receive a date and time from your driving school letting you know exactly when to attend your first lesson.
Most likely, you’ll start with theory classes.
I’ve put together a full explanation of how the theory lessons work on another page in the main menu — feel free to check it out!
Learning materials
When you register — or shortly afterwards — you’ll receive a set of learning materials.
The cost for these materials is included in your registration fee.
You will receive:
-
Access to an app where you can study for the theory test
-
One or more textbooks to help you prepare for the theoretical exams
