Theory Lessons for the German Class C(E) License

The theory lessons for the Class C or CE license are specifically designed to prepare you for the demands of professional truck driving.

Topics covered include:

​

Traffic laws and regulations
You’ll learn the special rules that apply to truck drivers, along with general traffic signs, laws, and safety regulations.

Vehicle technology and maintenance
We’ll explain the basic technical components of a truck – including vehicle structure, brake systems, suspension, and other key elements.

Safety measures and accident prevention
You’ll find out how to avoid dangerous situations on the road and how to act appropriately in case of an accident.

How many lessons are required before taking the theory test?

The minimum number of required theory lessons depends on the license class you’re aiming for.
Each double lesson lasts 90 minutes.

Required theory lessons by license class:

​

• C1 (3.5t – 7.5t):
  6 double lessons of basic knowledge (passenger car level)

  • 6 double lessons of additional truck-related content

• C1E (with trailer):
  No theory lessons required

• C (over 7.5t):
  6 double lessons of basic knowledge

  • 10 double lessons of Class C-specific topics

• CE (with trailer):
  6 double lessons of basic knowledge

  • 6 double lessons of trailer-specific topics

Combined C / CE license in one course:

If you are doing Class C and CE together, you need a total of 20 double lessons, broken down as follows:

• 6 double lessons of basic knowledge

• 10 double lessons for Class C

• 4 double lessons for Class CE

Accelerated Basic Qualification (BGQ)

The Accelerated Basic Qualification is a special training program required if you want to work as a professional truck driver and are pursuing a C1E, CE, or C license.
It is designed to provide drivers with the essential professional knowledge needed to operate a truck safely and responsibly in the commercial sector.

Duration and Structure of the Accelerated Basic Qualification

The training consists of a total of 140 hours (each 60 minutes), which are usually completed within 4 to 6 weeks.
Depending on the driving school, the schedule may be more flexible.

The course includes both theoretical and practical lessons (including 10 hours of practical training).

At the end of the course, a final exam is taken at the Chamber of Commerce (IHK) to confirm the qualification.
This exam is theoretical only and – as of 2024 – available in German only.

OPTIONAL (Not strictly required):

The ADR training
(short for “Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses”)
is a special qualification course for the transport of dangerous goods.

In Germany and many other European countries, this training is legally required if you plan to transport hazardous materials using a truck or trailer.
